Rescue groups band together in order to rescue donkey stuck inside of a sinkhole

Seeing people come together in order to save animals in need is truly inspiring. Recently, a heartwarming example of this took place when a community joined forces to save a donkey trapped in a sinkhole.

The donkey, affectionately named Dora, found herself helplessly stuck several feet underground in a sinkhole located in Granville County, North Carolina on a Sunday.

With Dora's considerable size making the rescue operation no easy feat, the task seemed daunting. However, the spirit of cooperation prevailed as several dedicated crews came together, working tirelessly to free the trapped donkey and bring her to safety.

Local animal control, Wake Forest first responders, Brassfield Volunteer Fire Department and a Raleigh urban search and rescue team all responded to the call to save Dora, according to WRAL.

“We always utilize mutual aid for house fires and car accidents, but this was definitely one for the books,” Rose Hockaday of the Brassfield volunteer fire department told the outlet.

According to a Facebook post from Wake Forest Fire Department, the teams joined forces to create a tripod-like lifting system to lift Dora out of the hole. The donkey was reportedly sedated throughout the rescue.

The operation took about three hours, but the team was successfully able to lift the donkey out of the sinkhole. Dora was examined by a veterinarian and reportedly suffered no injuries.

It was an inspiring show of teamwork, and everyone involved with the rescue was happy to help an animal in need.

“Myself and my son and my husband are all animal lovers so it makes you feel good to be able to help other people,” Hockaday told WRAL. “It made us all feel good. It was a win for everybody.”
