Man Escapes Wildfire by Taking Refuge in Pool While Flames Roared Around Him
In a dramatic tale of survival, an Australian man shared his harrowing escape from a devastating wildfire that swept through Western Australia years ago.
Peter Fabrici, a 53-year-old local, found himself confronting a raging inferno that scorched over 7,000 acres and destroyed more than 30 homes in the region.

As the wildfire approached, while many evacuated, Fabrici made the bold choice to stay behind and protect his home. Armed with scuba diving gear to help him breathe through the thick smoke, he fought spot fires and battled increasing winds as long as he could.
When the situation grew too dangerous, Fabrici sought refuge in his neighbor's pool. "I jumped into the pool with my scuba gear on and stayed underwater for about five minutes while the fire passed over me," Fabrici told Sky News. "I remained at the bottom, looking up and watching the blaze go by."
Though evacuating is always the safest option during a wildfire, Fabrici successfully shielded his home from the flames. "When I finally surfaced, I was astonished to find our house still standing, with no flames in sight," he recounted.
