Helicopter Hero: Rescuer Braves Wildfire to Save Family of Dogs Left Behind
By Mike-Ross

Amid the chaos of an evacuation caused by a fierce wildfire in the remote region above Cohasset near Campbellville, a touching story of bravery and compassion has emerged.
On Wednesday evening, as residents rushed to escape the advancing flames, one person's truck broke down, leading to the heart-wrenching decision to leave behind two adult Rottweilers and their puppies.

The owner, deeply worried about their pets, informed responders of the truck’s location. Unfortunately, the area was already engulfed in flames, making it impossible to reach immediately.
Undaunted, Trevor Skaggs, a committed member of the Butte County Sheriff's Office (BCSO) Search and Rescue team, took action.
Yesterday, Skaggs boarded a BCSO helicopter and flew to the hazardous area. After landing, he undertook a challenging 1.5-mile run to reach the stranded animals. Upon arrival, he discovered the mother Rottweiler and her puppies alive but drained and desperately thirsty. Tragically, the father of the puppies did not survive the ordeal.

Demonstrating remarkable resourcefulness, Skaggs shared his water and protein bar with the parched dogs, reviving their spirits. With gentle coaxing, he managed to lead the mother and her five puppies back the 1.5 miles to the helicopter. The courageous team was then flown to safety at the Chico Airport.
The rescued dogs are now under the care of the North Valley Animal Disaster Group, receiving the attention and love they need after their harrowing experience.
"It's been a horrific few days for our community and we are grateful to be able to share this amazing story," Butte County Sheriff's Search & Rescue shared.
