Florida Police Say: No More Selfies With Bears—It’s Not a 'Grizzly' Good Idea!

In a mix of humor and seriousness, the Walton County Sheriff’s Office in Florida is making a light-hearted plea: “Please, stop taking selfies with the black bear hanging out by the roadside.”
While the bear might look adorable, it's stressed and could be a bit more dangerous than your average photo op.

The Sheriff’s Office took to social media with a playful yet urgent message, starting with the amusing line: "Famous last words: 'If not friend, why friend-shaped?'"
Despite the humorous tone, the message is serious: this bear is not a photo opportunity. The bear has been spotted on the north side of Highway 98 in Santa Rosa Beach, and deputies are monitoring its movements closely. According to the Sheriff’s Office, the bear appears to be stressed and/or depressed.
"This black bear is stressed, depressed, and possibly in need of a spa day," the post quipped.

The Sheriff's Office emphasized the need for safety, noting that onlookers have been trying to take selfies with the bear, which is clearly not in the mood for pictures. One witness reported that cars were lined up along the side of the road, with people eagerly snapping pictures..
"We're going to leave the rest to the pros at Florida Fish and Wildlife who are en route," they added.
The post concluded with a crucial reminder: "PLEASE DO NOT APPROACH black bears at any time."
In an update, the sheriff's office reported that the bear "moseyed back into the woods." An FWC biologist also responded to the scene.
