Police investigate ‘sightings of a masked bandit,’ end up save raccoon with jar stuck on head

A police officer's responsibility extends to helping anyone in who's in need, no matter if its humans or animals. They are always ready to handle unexpected and uncommon situations.

In a heartwarming incident, Ohio police officers showed this commitment by coming to the rescue of a raccoon that found itself in a peculiar predicament - with its head stuck in a mayo jar.

As recounted in a Facebook post, the Painesville Police Department received a call about "sightings of a masked bandit" in the neighborhood. However, it wasn't a cat burglar on the loose; instead, it was a raccoon in desperate need of assistance. The officers wasted no time and stepped in to help the furry critter, exemplifying the compassion and dedication that makes them true everyday heroes.

The raccoon had gotten its head completely stuck in a mayonnaise jar, and the officers got to work freeing the distressed animal.

Video shows officers Chad Balausky and Steve Ettinger working to gently remove the mayo jar from the raccoon’s head. Once free, the raccoon quickly scurries away — so fast that their police intern had to hop out of the way.

The officers received praise from local citizens for saving the raccoon. “Thank you for all that you do – including rescuing this poor raccoon. You guys ARE the best!” one person commented on the Facebook post.

“What an incredibly loving act!” another wrote. “Your compassion shown this little creature is a wonderful example for everyone! You are all Heroes every single day!”

“You never know what you’ll see on night shift,” the Painesville Police Department wrote, implying that this was an unusual bit of police duty.

However, it’s not uncommon for raccoons to get stuck in jars like this. Raccoons like to go through our garbage in search of food, so it makes sense that they might go head-first into a discarded food jar with no way to get out.

Be sure to share this good news!
