These golden retrievers can do more than sit, stay, and fetch! At Golden PAWS, dogs learn how to help veterans heal from PTSD and other disabilities sustained in combat. Founded in 2012, the Florida-based organization doesn’t just train service dogs. It also assists veterans, first responders, and children in finding the perfect golden or Labrador retriever for their unique situation. According to NBC 2 News, over 150 retrievers have been matched to owners with mental or physical health needs.
“Every one of those dogs has saved a life,” said Kyle Reed, president of the board of directors at Golden PAWS.

Retiree Command Sergeant Major Craig Layton can attest to the incredible difference a service dog has made in his life. He met his beloved pooch, Sgt. Palmer, through Golden PAWS while going through a rough patch. After spending 32 years in the military, the veteran was haunted by distressing memories. He relied on harmful coping mechanisms, such as alcohol, until he was paired with his four-legged friend.
“I was definitely going down a bad road,” Craig recalled. “Definitely suicidal. He saved my life.”

Part of what makes Golden PAWS unique is their dedication to finding the perfect dog for each individual owner. On their website, the organization boasts a “customized approach to meet the needs of each recipient.” Craig experienced this firsthand when it took a few tries for him to find a service dog that he clicked with, he told NBC 2 News. Thanks to the organization’s careful matching process, he’s been able to form an inseparable bond with Sgt. Palmer.
There’s a reason that Golden PAWS deals exclusively in golden retrievers and Labs. According to them, “these breeds are ideally suited for service work, with an extremely high capacity for emotional intelligence and an innate desire to serve.” Plus, they’re pretty darn cute!
