The Heartwarming Story of the 'Unicorn' Dog Who Was Nearly Put Down for a Minor Bump

After almost being euthanized due to a lump on her head, a dog nicknamed the "unicorn" has been given a new lease on life and a loving home.

The Labelle Foundation rescued a pitbull named Strawberry last year, who was in a deplorable condition and on the verge of being put down. As per a social media post, Strawberry had two sizable lumps on her head and was severely neglected, suffering from mange and skin infections that made her skin appear bright pink.

Upon taking her in, The Labelle Foundation conducted tests and discovered that the lumps on Strawberry's head were merely scar tissue from an old injury and posed no threat to her life.

Unfortunately, the lumps were unable to be removed as the surgery would be purely cosmetic and carried a risk of brain damage. Despite this setback, the rescue remained committed to finding a loving family who would embrace the unique appearance of their "unicorn" dog.

"We adore our little unicorn as she is and are confident we will locate someone who feels the same way!" they expressed.

Thankfully, one family heard Strawberry’s story and quickly fell in love with the “very unique” dog.

“I just kept seeing her picture pop up on the foundation’s Instagram page and she was still available,” Kristen Kuhlman of South Pasadena, California told Today. “She just had such gentle eyes and, you know, I had never seen a dog like her ever before… She’s very unique and recognizable and one in a million, one of a kind.”

Kristen and her family adopted Strawberry in September, and the mom told Today that Strawberry had a tough time adjusting to her new home.

“Strawberry’s been through a lot in her life,” Kristen said, explaining she “didn’t know what was happening” and would cry at night.

But over time, Strawberry adjusted to her new surroundings and loves her adopted family.

“She came out of her shell within a couple of weeks and she became the most affectionate dog. My family loves her,” Kristen told Today. “She fits right into our family. It’s been great.”
