Young Teens get married in bride’s front yard after groom is given 3-5 months to live

Sadie Mills and Chase Smith, both 18-year-old high school seniors, exchanged vows in Sadie’s front yard. Before you jump to the conclusion that these two are too young, understand that their early wedding was filled with intense emotions for one very important reason: The couple were married a few days after Chase received the devastating news that he only had three to five months to live.

For the past six years, Chase has been battling the extremely rare and aggressive malignancy Ewing’s sarcoma. Before their marriage, he and Sadie had been seeing one other for six months.

“Overall, it was the best day of my life,” Sadie said in an interview with People magazine. “I’ve always wanted an outdoor wedding and the fact that Chase came up with the idea to have the altar right where we went on our first date, where we had our first kiss, that meant a lot to me.”

But a high-school wedding was not their original plan.

Originally, Chase and Sadie aspired to finish high school, enroll in college, and continue their swimming and diving careers. They also intended to wed, but it would be much later. All of their plans fell apart after Chase’s new prognosis, and they decided that getting married right away made the most sense.

About one month before their wedding, Chase learned that his cancer had returned aggressively and tumors were found throughout his body. Even undergoing treatment, Chase was given a terminal diagnosis with only a few months left to live.

“We definitely were thinking about getting married in the future and we knew we wanted to,” Chase told People. “A lot of people do say, ‘Oh they’re getting married because he has a potential to pass away soon,’ and that’s not at all why we decided to get married. It was more of just a wake-up call that, ‘Hey, God wants you two together.'”

Sadie agrees that their marriage was meant to be: “What was cool about that was whenever we were first talking about getting married, Chase brought it up and I already knew what he was gonna say. So I interrupted him and said, ‘No, I know the same thing.’ So that was definitely a God thing that the time was right.”

Chase and Sadie shared their plans with their parents and were met with nothing but support. “I have the best two parents I could possibly have,” Sadie said. “For them to be a hundred percent behind me and my choices and my decisions on who I love and who I wanted to marry when I wanted to marry, it couldn’t mean any more to me than what it did.”

The young couple followed the time honored tradition of staying apart until the ceremony. “I was so excited to see her,” Chase said about the moment he saw Sadie in her gown on their special day. “It was the pure reaction of being able to see her… It was like a hit in the chest of emotion.”

The young couple defied all odds and spent 11 joyful months together before Chase finally lost his battle with cancer at the age of 19. Never shy about his feelings, Chase always let the world know he loved two things above all else – his lord and savior Jesus Christ and his bride and best friend, Sadie.

Chase’s family shared some special footage from their wedding day in a special video below.
