This scam is serious and is designed to clean you out completely while making you think you’re getting a little extra.
Berry who lives in Braxton County, West Virginia, received a check for $1,892.35 that appears to be from Walmart. It came with a letter asking her to be a secret shopper for the big-box retailer.
“When I saw the check, I was like ‘woo-hoo.’ I was excited. It’s $1,800 dollars. Everyone can use $1,800 dollars.”
The check looked real. It even had the signature of Wal-Mart senior vice president of finance and treasurer, Jeff Davis.
Yet, Berry had her doubts that this money wasn’t real. So to get a second opinion, she consulted her daughter. Soon enough, Berry learned that the check was a scam. If deposited, the check would send bank account information to the scammer. Other similar stories have appeared across the country in Wisconsin and in Maryland.
Every fraudulent check had an amount near $2,000 and was accompanied by a letter to be a Walmart mystery shopper.
This scam comes in the form of a letter that appears to be from Walmart, and in said letter is a check and information on your new “Quality Control” position at your local Walmart. If you choose to accept that ‘position’ you’ll need to activate the check in order to deposit it. Once you follow the instructions to activate and get the supposed money deposited, thieves then take every last penny in your account.
On the Walmart website, the retailer claims they do not use any secret shopper service. They even offer tips to help prevent loyal customers from falling victim to the scam.
This is a scam that no one needs to fall for, so be sure to tell your family and friends to be on the lookout! If you or anyone you know do ever come across a letter like this, the best thing to do would be to let your local police station know.
