If you ever walked around your neighborhood, you will realize that there are a few restrictions that are placed in the area. However, for one elderly lady in Texas, her night was a nightmare. Now they may not technically be part of a homeowner’s association, those in charge believe neighbors should keep their yards and homes in pristine condition. So when an elderly woman living in such a neighborhood in Texas could no longer perform yard work or pay to have it done for her, her town threatened to throw her behind bars unless her grass was the right length.
Instead of watching their elderly neighbor spend time in jail, a group of young men decided to band together and fix the problem. And because of these young men, she did not have to get taken in by the police.
75-year-old Gerry Suttle was horrified when she heard that her police department issued a warrant for her arrest. They were unsatisfied with how she cared for her property, and because the grass was over 18 inches tall, the local law wanted her to suffer. But the elderly lady, who did not have much money and was unable to cut the grass herself, was unaware that she was even breaking the law.
But things started to spiral out of her control. She was summoned to court to testify about the length of her grass. But she missed the court date because she never received the notice from the government. And at that time, the judge, who had no sympathy for the elderly woman, issued a warrant for her arrest for failing to appear in court.
This neighborhood really hates it when people don’t mow their lawns. I’ve never heard of a town that arrests people because their grass is too long.
Thankfully, a group of local boys heard about Suttle’s plight. And they refused to let the law take her in for having long grass on her property. Together, they grabbed their parents’ mowers and clippers and started fixing up the elderly woman’s Texas property.
“It’s a summer day. We don’t have season passes yet to Warren Falls. What else could we do? Just go out and help some people,” said Blaine Reynolds, one of the young boys that helped pitch in.
Although the youngsters did not know Suttle personally, they were shocked that she was facing arrest. And because she needed their help, they did not hesitate to deliver it.
“We haven’t met her before, but I mean, like I said, she’s 75-years-old, she needs some help out here mowing. I mean, that’s the least we could do,” Reynolds added.
While the young boys were the first to act, their generosity caught the attention of the entire neighborhood. Before long, lots of other people came outside to help Suttle fix up her property so the cops wouldn’t arrest her.
It was a hot day, but her neighbors didn’t want her arrested. And when Suttle saw the results, she was brought to tears.
“I cannot believe this. I’m very seldom without words, but this is one time, you mark it down in history, that I didn’t have something to say,” she said.
