All the supplies you need to keep your clothes clean and fresh cost a lot of money. And laundry detergent is very expensive. But with a simple household ingredient, you can save a lot of money year over year.
And if you haven’t guessed already what it is – it is vinegar.
White vinegar is one of those household items that are more versatile than you’d ever suspect. But when it comes to laundry, vinegar is a no-brainer.

Not only is it free from harmful chemicals, but vinegar can also work wonders in your laundry load for several reasons. But before you even start washing your clothes, vinegar can help wash out your machine. It cuts through soap scum and other mineral deposits. Clean your washer by adding two cups of vinegar into your machine. Run it with an empty cycle on hot and watch the household ingredient wipe away the unwanted buildup.
If you smoke, vinegar can get rid of the smell. Just add ½ cup of vinegar to your load of laundry and banish the smell of cigarettes for good.
Do you enjoy wearing colorful clothes? Then adding a ½ cup of white vinegar to the final rinse can brighten up your clothes. And not only does it make your colors more vibrant, but vinegar also contains acetic acid, which can stop your whites from greying.
While it does great on white clothing, vinegar can also deepen the color of your darks. Adding half a cup of vinegar to your final rinse can remove the detergent buildup that dulls your colors.
Mildew is a buzz kill. And you’ll be stoked to know that vinegar can save the day. Whenever your washing machine starts to have the mildew smell, pour two cups of vinegar into it and wash it on empty with warm water. This trick can cut through the mildew and make your machine (and your clothes) smell much better.
You probably know that fabric softeners are filled with chemicals. These chemicals are what permeate the fibers in the fabric and make it feel softer. But vinegar can have much the same effect without chemicals. Pour ½ cup into your final rinse cycle and enjoy soft-to-the-touch fabric. If you want to infuse a good scent with it, add a few drops of lavender oil or another essential oil to your final rinse cycle.
Clingy clothes attract gunk. But vinegar has the potential to cut through static. Half a cup of the stuff in your final rinse does the trick.
Underarm odor can get stuck in your shirts. Pour vinegar and water in a spray bottle and soak up your shirts’ underarms. Let it soak for ten minutes then toss it in the wash. Watch yellow armpit stains go away.
Grease destroys suede. But dip a toothbrush in vinegar and rub it on the area. It helps.
If your colors run, add vinegar to a cold-water wash and your bold colors should hold better.
