10-Year-Old Boy Has Died After Getting Flu, His Older Brother Now Hospitalized

With the flu season here, unfortunately a tragedy has hit a Connecticut family with young children. 10-year-old Nico Mallozzi passed away Sunday, January 14th after being contracted with the flu.

TODAY reports that Nico became ill as he traveled with his hockey team in New York. The team was reportedly heading to a tournament.
Nico was diagnosed with Influenza B before he suddenly died. This particular strain of flu can cause complications such as pneumonia and sepsis, which overwhelms the immune system, as NBC New York reports.
However, doctors say they aren't completely sure if the flu is what caused the boy’s death. Also Nico’s medical history is unknown.

New York is one of the known states where the flu strain is high during flu season. Other states with high flu activity include Colorado, Texas, California, Nevada, Washington, Oregon, and many others.
Sadly, Nico’s older brother Joey Mallozzi was also sent to the hospitial after testing positive for the flu. Joey is only 12 years old.
TODAY stated that it is too early to determine how bad this year's flu season will be, but unfortunately it there have been already 20 confirmed deaths of children so far. Flu season starts in February, so it is possible that this number will continue to grow.
The flu vaccination is only partially effective, but it can help lessen the severity of symptoms. For more information about flu prevention and cures, please visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website.
Please keep this family in your prayers.
