After days of constant crying coming from one Houston apartment, a neighbor living next to Nancy Rua decided she had heard enough and decided to investigate. After nobody answered her knocking, the brave neighbor opened the unlocked door and walked in on a scene she wasn’t prepared for.

The 35-year-old woman who lived in the apartment mostly kept to herself and wasn’t friendly with others in her building. Nothing seemed amiss about her apartment arrangements until a chilling cry began and didn’t stop for days. Now, the neighbor who exposed Rua’s sickening secret is being credited as a hero by Child Protective Services (CPS) who apparently didn’t have a clue what had been going on all of this time.
The screams were cries for help that the neighbor at the Windsor Park apartments couldn’t ignore. The unnamed woman finally went to the front door and knocked several times with no answer before letting herself in as a matter of emergency. As she followed the child’s cries to a locked bedroom, she entered the room and found Rua’s 7-year-old son chained up, showing signs of physical abuse. She also noticed he was without food and water before quickly calling the police.
Rua wasn’t home at the time since this entrapment was seemingly what she used as a cheap alternative for daycare. The boy’s father also lived in the apartment, but he was nowhere to be found and still remains at large. Rua was taken into custody and charged with abandonment, which is the least of what she should face. While CPS was interviewing her son, he told them that his mom would regularly hit him with a belt and his dad beat him with shoes “a lot,” KHOU reported.
Residents in her building are in shock at what was happening down the hall, which would have continued had one of them not stepped in. “To be 100 percent honest, that makes me sick because I can’t have children,” said Shoshaunna Nwani, who lives by Rua and heard about what happened. “I would love nothing more than for her to burn in hell.”
The woman, who rescued this boy by not ignoring the obvious issues, deserves a lot of credit. It’s all too common in society today for people to keep to themselves and not look out for their neighbor. Had that been this woman’s approach, this child would have endured many more days of abuse that he may not have ever recovered from.
