Who knew that a dollar bill may be worth more than face value! Most people don’t look at the serial numbers on their dollar bills, but it may be time to start checking out your dollars regularly.
In the bottom left and top right portions of your dollar bills, there will be serial numbers. Many collectors are currently looking for dollar bills with repeating digits, whether it’s just one or two number repeating, and other strange combinations such as a “double quad.” A double quad is when the first four digits are the same and then the last four digits are also the same. They are also looking for “palindrome” serial numbers, which is when numbers read the same backwards.
The key is the eight-digit serial number, and whether it seems ‘fancy’ or special to collectors. It's mostly about number patterns. Even $1, $2 and $5 bills can be worth many face value, according to collector Dave Undis of coolserialnumbers.com. Royersford, Pa., dealer Billy Baeder has a $10 bill with the serial number A00000001A that he believes is worth $500,000 because it's a rare 1933 Silver Certificate.
The only real way to know if you have one of these bills is to check the numbers of your bills against the coveted numbers listed on serial number websites. You may be surprised by what you find. Who knew that a simple dollar bill could function as a lottery ticket in its own right?
