Let's talk about something we all love but might not give enough attention to – pillows! You know, those trusty companions we snuggle up with every night? Well, turns out they can get pretty gross after a while. Think drool, oil, sweat – you name it. Yuck! That's why it's essential to give them a good clean at least twice a year.
But before you toss your pillows in the washing machine, hold up! Not all pillows are created equal, and cleaning them isn't a one-size-fits-all deal. Trust me, I learned this the hard way when I accidentally ruined a pillow by tossing it in the machine without checking the tag first. Lesson learned!
So, before you make the same mistake I did, take a peek at the tag – it could be a real lifesaver. And if you're like me and you've already chopped off those tags, don't sweat it. I've got your back! Check out these awesome tips from Mattress Clarity in the video below. She'll walk you through how to clean any type of pillow like a pro.
Ready to dive in? Here are three ways to get those pillows squeaky clean:
Machine Wash and Dry: Most pillows, like microfibers, polyesters, shredded foams, and down alternatives, can handle a spin in the washing machine. Just remember to remove the cover or any pieces before you toss them in. Oh, and don't forget to balance the load – no one likes a wonky washing machine! Use a gentle detergent, throw in a tube sock (yep, you read that right!), and opt for a gentle cycle to keep those feathers from getting fried. And if it still smells funky after drying, toss in a tennis ball for an extra fluff boost!

2 – Hand Clean Or Spot Clean
This method applies to latex or memory foam pillows. Add detergent to a washcloth, and dab it into the area. Wring it out then allow it to fully dry. Place it outside or place it beside a window, if possible. The pillow cover may be removable and could be machine washable.

3 – Not Washing At All
Buckwheat hulls are hard, crispy filling. They get soggy when wet and you can’t use them anymore. Remove the filling, and machine wash and dry the cover. Once dry, put the buckwheat hulls back in before you use it.
