From Homelessness to Motherhood: Story of a Pregnant Woman who befriends cop, asks him to adopt her baby
This incredible story is proof that life has a way of surprising us in the most astounding ways. Santa Rosa Police Officer Jesse Whitten never thought that his act of kindness towards a homeless woman would change both of their lives forever. But when this woman, who was struggling with addiction and expecting a baby, asked Jesse and his wife Ashley to adopt her child, they knew that their lives would never be the same again.
Jesse and the homeless woman struck up an unlikely friendship that blossomed over time. Whenever Jesse encountered her on patrol, they would chat, and he would try to help her in any way possible. Jesse's efforts included driving her to shelters and detox centers, doing everything in his power to help her stay sober. But despite his best efforts, the woman continued to struggle with addiction. Even so, Jesse's wife Ashley joined him on patrol, and the two women quickly became close friends. Little did they know that their bond would lead to a life-changing moment that they would never forget.
One day, Jesse and Ashley received a call that would change their lives forever. The woman had given birth to a baby girl and specifically requested that the couple adopt the newborn. Jesse and Ashley left their three daughters with their pastor and rushed to the hospital.
“We wondered, ‘Are you asking us to keep her forever?’” Jesse said in an interview. “She was saying ‘I want you to have her forever.’”
They officially adopted the baby and named her Harlow Masie Whitten. At 6-months, Harlow was healthy and happy despite being exposed to several drugs while in the womb. Ashley is grateful the woman chose them to be Harlow’s parents.
“She loved her daughter enough to give her a family,” Ashley said. “And we were so honored to be that family.”
