Robot that famously stated it would “destroy humans” becomes world’s first robotic citizen

A humanoid robot equipped with some of the world’s most sophisticated artificial intelligence has just become the world’s first robot citizen.

Sophia, the brainchild of robotics designer David Hanson of Hanson Robotics, was granted citizenship by Saudi Arabia as part of the Future Investment Initiative held in Riyadh on Wednesday, October 25.

Her fully expressive face is entirely aesthetic and included only for the benefit of Sophia’s human counterparts. Her eyes don’t actually see anything, but a camera embedded in her chest allows Sophia to sense the world around her.

“I am very honored and proud of this unique distinction,” Sophia said to the audience. “This is historical to be the first robot in the world to be recognized with a citizenship.”

During a moderated panel discussion, Sophia answered question from journalist Andrew Ross Sorkin. Most of her interview was focused on her status as a humanoid robot and fears associated with advanced AI programs. She even made a joke about Elon Musk when Sorkin said “we all want to prevent a bad future.”

During a demonstration at the SXSW festival in March of 2016, Sophia became famous when her creator asked “Do you want to destroy humans?…Please say ‘no'” to which she replied “OK. I will destroy humans.”

More than a year and a half later Sophia assures the audience that her intentions aren’t so sinister. During the interview, she tells Sorkin she hopes to help humanity “live a better life,” and that “I will do much [sic] best to make the world a better place.”

What do you think about Sophia’s citizenship?
