Retired nurse saves 3-month-old baby who stopped breathing during flight to Florida

A baby's life was saved when a retired nurse was in the right place at the right time. She acted quickly when a 3-month-old baby stopped breathing in the middle of a flight to Florida.
It all happened on a Spirit Airlines flight that had been in the air for about 30 minutes. Tamara Panzino, our story’s hero, was on her way to take a cruise departing from Florida. She was listening to music when she heard a flight attendant say that an infant on board wasn’t breathing.

Then she heard over the loudspeaker, “Is there a doctor onboard?” The retired nurse went straight for the baby, noticing that she was clearly in distress. She was motionless and had blue lips. Tamara stated that her “heart had just dropped.”
The infant had stopped breathing completely and their lips were turning blue. Tamara started a sternal rub. “It’s kind of an aggressive shake of the chest” she said in an interview with WESH News.
After a few seconds that felt like hours, the infant’s color came back and they started breathing again.
The parents and other passengers were quick to call Tamara a hero, but she disagrees. “It’s not a hero thing,” she said. “It’s a community coming together and everyone volunteering to help with what their knowledge can do. I’m glad I was there.”
