Pentatonix’s Brand New Rendition of “Hallelujah” is Absolutely Breathtaking
Grammy-winning a capella group, Pentatonix, is well-known for dropping spine-chilling videos on YouTube out of nowhere. Their cover of Great Big World’s “Say Something” hit YouTube in early 2014, and without any warning immediately accrued 30 million views. Two years later, the video is close to 60 million views.
But we’ve never been so excited for new Pentatonix music as we are this week.
One of our favorite numbers on the new album? The Pentatonix cover of Leonard Cohen’s classic tune, “Hallelujah.”
This song is already beautifully written, but this may be the best cover of the iconic song that we’ve ever heard. Between the extraordinary four-part harmonies, and ever-impressive beat boxing, and the gorgeously shot music video, this could be one of the groups’ best numbers to date.

As most of their videos are, this music video looks as good as it sounds. Shot entirely in a beautiful, dusty desert landscape, all five group members are standing solemnly in a triangular formation as they deliver chilling vocal performances of the song.
The four main vocalists of the group took turns on this one, which worked out perfectly considering that there are four verses to this classic song, each more beautiful than the next.
Scott Hoying, baritone lead for the group, started the number as the group walked forward through the haunting grey backdrop of the desert landscape. The moment his fellow vocalists came in with their swelling background harmonies, we immediately got chills. Avi Kaplan, intense vocal bass for the group, took the next verse, surprising us as always with his impressive tone (and lovely, flowing locks.)

Heading the tip of the pyramid formation, mezzo-soprano lead Kirstin Maldonado, took the third verse with her extremely powerful voice. And, finally, tenor lead Mitch Grassi finished the last solo verse, killing it with his amazing range. Of course, Kevin Olusola kept the entire song together with his endlessly jaw-dropping beat boxing and body percussion.
Together, dressed fabulously and staring piercingly into the camera, the group pulled together one of the most amazing a capella performances we’ve ever heard.
