Deer falls in freezing lake, close to death until its rescued at the last second. Saviors are not who you’d expect

When winter arrives, bringing the bad weather with it, the ground can get dangerous.
This is especially true when it comes to roads. Distances must be carefully observed and speed must be monitored at all times. If not, things can easily end badly.
Of course, it’s not just the roads that become a death trap.
Even lakes and rivers can be dangerous to both humans and animals. One must always remember never to walk out on the ice when alone. If you should suffer an accident, there’s no one to help you, and it’s a dangerously short time before freezing water can prove fatal.
If you’ve ever broken ice and fallen into freezing cold water, you’ll know how difficult it is to get out again.
Of course, people are often pre-warned of dangerous areas, whereas animals generally have no idea whether it’s safe or not to walk out on ice.

Sadly, it can often be extremely hard to help animals in distress when they’ve fallen into water.
Take the story in this blog, when a deer fell through the ice in Russia. Fortunately, there were hunters nearby who saw the animal fighting for its life.

It might not sound likely; hunters saving the life of an animal, but on this occasion it’s what happened.
The deer had fallen through ice on the frozen lake of Barguzen, near Ulan-Ude in eastern Siberia, Russia. Four men worked together to cut away enough ice to pull the deer free. The rescue took them over four hours.

Aleksej Baluey, who filmed the whole thing, can be heard saying: “We have to get it in from the cold”. The hunters massaged the animal to improve its blood circulation, all the while knowing it was a race against the clock to save its life.
It was in a nearby barn that they dried the deer off and tried to keep him alive.

They fed the deer fat and cabbage, along with 150 millimetres of vodka to heat it from the inside.
When the creature was strong enough, they took him into the woods and set him free.
