After Marine Dies, His 83-year-old Friend Fulfills Promise He Made Inside Of A Bunker During Vietnam
By Dreamer

During New Year's Eve of 1968, before dawn, Marines and friends Master Sgt. William H. Cox and First Sgt. James T. Hollingsworth were trapped inside of a bunker in Vietnam.
Cox stated that they were in a very tough spot, more specifically they were “really putting on a fireworks show for us.” What he meant was that the enemy were launching mortars and rockets towards them. The area was not safe.
It was at this scary moment that these friends made this pact: “If we survived this attack, or survived Vietnam, we would contact each other every year on New Year’s.”

They kept the promise for about five decades until Hollingsworth passed away. Then Cox kept the promise one more time, standing guard at the casket and delivering a heartfelt eulogy.
Cox says, “There’s a bond between Marines that’s different from any other branch of service. We’re like brothers.”
