Everyone has heard the old saying, “Never judge a book by it’s cover,” and this story we have today proves just that. A pizza delivery guy showed up with an order to one residence and as he walked in, he noticed a piano inside. Now normally, no one would expect a pizza delivery man to be an exceptional piano player, but that’s exactly what one homeowner learned once he was invited inside to tickle the ivories.
Julie Varchetti’s husband, Paul, had ordered pizza from Hungry Howie’s in Shelby Township, Michigan, but besides the delicious pizza they had that night, they got more than they ever could have expected: They got an impromptu performance, too.
18-year-old Bryce Dudal arrived with their pizza and notice the piano in their foyer, asking if he could look at it. Paul invited him in and the next thing you know, he delivered a flawless rendition of a Beethoven classic, the third movement of Moonlight Sonata.
Paul, of course, snagged the whole moment on video, as Bryce stunned him with his talent. Julie later shared the video on her Facebook page, where it went viral, racking up the views.
She told the Washington Post: “He was just beyond good.”
Bryce had explained that he’s mostly self-taught on the piano and had memorized this piece when he was six or seven years old. He explained how he would listen to it for hours and then try to recreate what he heard on a keyboard.
He noted: “It was a long process. You have to sit there and think and try to put it on the piano, piece by piece. I couldn’t read music back then. I would sit there and listen for hours and hours and try to figure it out.”
When he was 12, Bryce’s parents found a music teacher who taught him how to read music and helped him perfect the piece.
Bryce told the Washington Post: “It’s a flashy, fast, amazing piece. A lot of people sit down at the piano and play something slow and beautiful. But when I play for someone, I like to go all out.”
His talent usually goes unnoticed when he’s on the job, as he noted, “All they see is a pizza delivery guy.”
While Bryce it undeniably talented, he had stopped playing piano a year ago to focus on baseball, receiving a baseball scholarship to Macomb Community College. With all of the time dedicated to sports, he didn’t have time for music.
Among the many people who weighed in with comments on the Daily Mail’s coverage of the story were those who were blown away, such as this commenter: “I hope that the family tipped him very well for his lovely performance, not to mention the pizza. Above and beyond. Amazing perseverance.”
Another commenter noted: “He is very very good! This is not only a difficult piece to memorize, but for him to remember it after all these years is itself amazing. He should continue with his piano playing as well as baseball.”
Others, however, weren’t so impressed, with one person writing: “Probably sounds decent to someone who isn’t a music industry professional. I have students age 10 who can crush this guy. Timing is way off and he’s stabbing the keys, not playing with any finesse. 6 out of 10. Ok for a pizza guy.”
