Combine These Three Ingredients Together And Say Goodbye To Mosquitos Forever!
By Dreamer

In the summer months, getting outside to enjoy the beautiful weather is often tainted by an excess of pesky bugs. Perhaps most irritating are mosquitos and, while applying bug repellent or lighting citronella candles is generally pretty effective, there’s a better way. It’s easy enough to put this mosquito trap together with items you may already have — and it’s a cheap solution too!
Following the video’s instructions to turn an old soda bottle into a trap for mosquitos is a cinch. Since mosquitoes are attracted to carbon dioxide, they’ll pay a visit to the bottle where they will become trapped and die. You can hang the bottle near where you’ll be playing in the backyard with the kids or hosting a bbq, rather than putting them at the perimeter of your property, for best results.

Here’s how it works: mosquitos come for the carbon dioxide, make their way down the funnel of the bottle and take a nip of the sweet yeast water. Once they’ve filled up on the snack, they will try to go in search of a little blood, only they won’t be able to escape. Trapped inside of the bottle once they tire out, they will die in the bait water. A little tape at the bottle’s edges should prevent any insects from making the climb up and out, plus it seals the chemical reaction inside.
You will want to swap these out every couple of weeks with some freshly mixed liquid. You can also go for a smaller bottle if you want something that takes up less space.

You’ll need a 2-liter plastic soda bottle with the cap removed, ¼ cup of brown sugar, ¼ teaspoon yeast, and 1 cup hot or warm water. Begin by cutting the bottle a third of the way down with a serrated knife, then add the brown sugar to the bottom, pour in the water, and add the yeast.
Next, invert the top half of the soda bottle so the neck fits well into the bottom half.

One commenter had this hilarious step-by-step solution: “Step one. Get a coke bottle and cut in half. Step two: Cut an artery and fill the coke bottle 1/4 full of human blood; mosquitos love blood. Apply a tourniquet to stop bleeding Step three: Place the coke bottle top inside the lower portion and set where mosquitos get to it. Step four: Repeat until you no longer can lift your limbs.”
Other commenters, however found this a better method for trapping flies, with one person explaining: “mosquitos are attracted to carbon dioxide in your breath, they drink blood (females only); the males might be attracted to this contraption because they don’t bite humans as they do not require blood. The females need blood to lay their eggs therefore they bite, they will not go to this trap.”

Another commenter agreed, noting: “It attracts the male mosquitoes that feed off of sweet nectar from flowers. You want the female mosquitoes which feed off blood and aren’t attracted to sweet things. I mean I guess you could argue that by attracting the male mosquitoes that you would keep them from breeding.”
