Mother Makes Life Or Death Decision In Order To Save Unborn Baby During Surgery
By Mike-Ross

The birth of your child is supposed to be a wonderful and memorable event. But that notion came crashing down when Wes and Karisa Bugal found out in the middle labor that Karisa suffered from a relatively unknown condition called amniotic fluid embolism.

This affects 1 in 100,000 live births and it means almost certain death for either the mother or the newborn. Karisa had two options, and one was far more dangerous for their unborn son, Declan, than the other. "Her other option would have been to stay awake for her surgery, but by the time we would have put in a spinal tap or something it's possible Declan would not have made it," Dr. Kelly Gerow explained to USA Today.

So Karisa opted to undergo the emergency C-section while being unconscious, fully understanding that the choice was a death sentence. Just as the doctors forewarned, Karisa passed away, but little Declan was born a healthy baby boy - all thanks to his mother's sacrifice.
