Doctors Told Her She Wouldn't Be Able To Have A Baby, Becomes Pregnant Then She Notices Rash. It Doesn't Stop There

A soon to be teen mother in Connecticut has made the choice to keep her child, although this miracle baby has been testing for the Zika virus.

"I'm not happy that my baby is going to be born with Zika but God has given me a miracle," 17-year-old Sara Mujica, of Danbury, told PEOPLE.

It has been some time since Sara even though about being a mother of her own. Sara was 15 years of age when she had contracted meningitis. Doctors told her she wouldn't be able to give birth to a child. Sara and her fiancé, Victor Cruz, 19, learned they were expecting on March 14, just a few days after she began showing signs of the Zika virus.

"I was getting rashes all over my body: my legs, my arms, my face everywhere, and I also had a fever and headaches," Sara recalled. "I started researching Zika but I also thought it could be chicken pox."

Just one month after visiting her fiancé in Honduras, where he currently lives, Sara finally learned that she tested positive for the Zika virus, which she likely contracted during the trip.

"My mom called me hysterically crying, she told me her heart was breaking for me," Sara told PEOPLE.

While Sara and Victor briefly discussed terminating the pregnancy after learning the devastating news, they ultimately decided they couldn’t go through with it.

"I mean it's a hard choice, I don't know exactly how I'm going to bring up a child with a disability," she said. "But I am Catholic and I believe that I must raise the child that God gave me."

The Zika virus has been known to cause a slew of serious birth defects, most notably microcephaly—which causes incomplete brain development and small head size—but health experts still don’t know just how damaging it can be for a child.
