Mother Given the Choice of Her Life or Her Baby’s… Here’s What She Picked
A Colorado mother was faced with an impossible situation while she was giving birth to her son – only one of them would be able to live and it was up to her to choose.
According to 7Online, Karisa Bugal of Aurora, Colorado was rushed to the hospital on November 3 to give birth to her son Declan. The only problem was that she suffered from a rare condition called amniotic fluid embolism, which is where the fluid surrounding the baby escapes into the rest of the mother’s body and causes “catastrophic shutdown of all the organs,” Dr. Kelly Gerow said.

According to KTLA, the condition only occurs in 1 out of 80,000 births and hasn’t been extensively studied.

Doctors rushed Karisa Bugal to the delivery room to perform an emergency cesarean section, knowing it was possible they could lose baby Declan, the television station reported.
As the baby’s heart rate started to dip, his mother made a critical decision: to go under right away. The option was the best for her son, but not for her, according to the CNN affiliate.
“Her other option would have been to decline that and stay awake for her surgery, but by the time we would have put in a spine or something, it’s possible that Declan would not have made it,” Gerow said.
Dr. Gerow said that Bugal was able to ask about her baby, and even asked how big he was before being taken to the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit. Tragically, she died just a short while after.

“She came to the hospital to be a mom and she did what she was supposed to do,” Maren Oates, Karisa Bugal’s sister, said.
Bugal’s husband, Wes, is still dealing with the extremely sad reality that his family faces and said he has no idea how he’s going to explain what happened to his son when the time is right.

“How do I explain to him that his mom is gone giving birth to him?” he said. “How do I explain when he asks where’s mommy?”
The family has had a GoFundMe page set up in their honor, which continues to receive donations from people who are touched by their tragic story. They’ve already raised over $45,000 and it’s continue to rapidly grow.
