Her Husband Hasn’t Spoken In 16 Yrs, But Watch What He Does When She Looks In His Eyes…
By Dreamer
A woman whose husband lost his voice due to ALS hasn’t heard him speak in over 15 years, but with the use of modern technology he is now able to communicate, and the first thing he did was write her a love letter.
Don and Lorraine Moir have been married since 1989. As soon as they tied the knot they got to work on their farm and had 3 children. Sadly, six years into their marriage, Don was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects motor coordination.
The disease progresses rapidly, taking away a person’s ability to walk, dress, write, speak, swallow, and breathe.
In May of 1999, it became apparent that Don would need a ventilator to help him breathe. Although the ventilator extended his life, it also meant that he would lose the ability to talk.
It’s been over a decade since he had the operation, and the only way Don has been able to communicate is through a letter board. Don uses his eyes to choose a letter from a quadrant on a sheet of paper and slowly spells out words. Although it’s a painstaking process, Lorraine was grateful that she could still talk with her husband this way.
One day while listening to the radio, Lorraine heard about Mick Ebeling, founder of Not Impossible Labs, a company that uses technology to assist people with disabilities. She contacted them in hopes that they could help Don.
Javed Gangjee, a volunteer with Not Impossible, set out with his team to create a computer device just like Don’s letter board that uses Don’s eyes to choose letters and words. After he “types” a message, the words are then spoken by an audible voice.
This program allows him to speak closer to the speed of conversation. Don has become increasingly proficient with the device and is finally able to tell his wife anything in real time.
As soon as he mastered the program, Don wrote his devoted wife a heartwarming love letter:
“My dear Lorraine, I can’t imagine life without you. You have made the last 25 years fly by and the last 20 with ALS bearable. I can’t wait for the next 20 with you. Love, Don.”
With this amazing technology, Don and Lorraine can cherish each other now more than ever.
