The Iowa family of 17-year-old Taylor Hale had endured several years of their daughter being kept alive only by medical equipment, after she fell into a coma following a tragic accident. On September 11, 2011, Hale had been flung from the hood of a car after she playfully jumped on it. From that, she suffered a brain hemorrhage that resulted in a coma.
Her parents were given no hope after years of waiting for their daughter to open her eyes. Almost four years later, they were told she had reached a medical “point of no return.” Taylor had officially been declared clinically brain-dead.

As they were facing a life and death decision and deciding whether to donate her organs, along with contemplating the details of their daughter’s funeral, a man entered the room.
Professionally, Jeff Stickel is a chiropractor, but this particular day, the valiant Christian man felt moved to do a more important job as a prayer warrior for Taylor and her devastated parents. Stickel stopped by the teen’s hospital room and asked her parents if he could pray with them over their comatose daughter.
After first telling him that there was nothing he could do for her and claiming she was too far gone, the desperate parents accepted Stickel’s offer. He placed his hand on Taylor’s neck and pleaded to his Savior to spare the young girl’s life. The emotional moment came to an end and Stickel slipped back out of the room, leaving the girl with her parents in the same condition she was prior to his prayer session with them.
Later that day came the moment that Taylor’s parents had to officially accept her fate, and they decided it was time to remove her from life support. Physicians unplugged the the wires that had sustained her, until she was completely detached from the machine that had kept her alive all this time. It was only a matter of minutes before Taylor would succumb to her condition.
Then there was a gasp. Shortly after the last plug was pulled, Taylor drew breath on her own.
Her first breath transpired into more independent signs of improvement, with each hour that passed from that point forward. “(H)er brain activity picked up, her eyelids were aflutter, and for the first time in a week she was trying to talk,” the Daily Mail reported.
Eventually, Taylor woke all the way up, but she needed extensive rehabilitation to learn how to eat, talk, and walk, after so much time of brain inactivity. Ever since her first miraculous breath, she has made remarkable improvement, and will now be able to celebrate overcoming all odds by walking with her graduating class of Waukee High School this coming Monday.
Taylor is not left free of struggle, as she still suffers from some cognitive abilities and is without long-term memory. Perhaps what is most troubling for this teen, is that many of her former high school friends turned their backs on her, and those relationships were not there on the other end of injury. But that is not holding her back, she’s happy to have a second chance at life and continues to trudge along.

Although the teen is grateful for the efforts of the medical professionals who help her, she attributes the fact that she is here today, breathing and heart-beating, to a higher power.
“I’m always thankful to all the doctors and nurses and therapists who helped me get better, but God did most of the saving,” she said, beaming with gratitude.
The power of prayer is often understated, but it should never be underestimated. It can restore faith, heal the sick, comfort the lonely, restore relationships, and bring those who are lost back home. Whether all is well in life or you’re down on your luck, it never hurts to look up and pray to your maker.
