Elementary School Student Shares Lunch With Hungry Friend, Pays The Price

A 13-year-old California boy was reportedly given detention after he shared his lunch with a friend.
Kyle Bradford, a student at Weaverville Elementary School, decided to give his chicken burrito to a friend at lunch who didn’t like a cheese sandwich given to him. Bradford says that he wasn’t hungry at the time, so he didn’t see anything wrong with giving it away rather than throwing it out.
“It seemed like he couldn't get a normal lunch so I just wanted to give mine to him because I wasn't really that hungry and it was just going to go in the garbage if I didn't eat it,” said Bradford.
Weaverville Elementary, as part of the Trinity Alps Unified School District, follows a district-wide policy that prohibits students from sharing meals with others due to allergy and hygiene concerns.
“We have a policy that prohibits students from exchanging meals,” said Superintendent Tom Barnett. “Of course if students are concerned about other students not having enough to eat we would definitely want to consider that, but because of safety and liability we cannot allow students to actually exchange meals.”
Bradford’s mother believes that her son did the right thing by helping his friend.
“By all means the school can teach them math and the arithmetic and physical education, but when it comes to morals and manners and compassion, I believe it needs to start at home with the parent,” said Sandy Bradford.
Despite his punishment, Bradford says he would do it again if it meant helping a friend.
