Principal Denies Him Of Handshake At Graduation. When He Realizes Why? He LOSES It.
By Dreamer

Graduation day is such a special time for so many students. They sit with their class waiting for their named to be called. Hearing their name, they’re recognized for their 13 years of hard work. After such a long journey, it’s finally paid off as you walk across the stage and grab that diploma. It’s quite the exciting moment. Student by student, they read off each name in alphabetical order.

Envision the moment: The excitement builds as the announcer gets closer and closer to your name. Your time is finally here. Then… they skip over your name. Can you imagine? What would be going through your head? Confusion, sadness, nervousness, maybe even anger. Well, that’s exactly what Steven Turner Jr. was going through on his graduation day.
Once all his classmates walked, he finally made his way towards center stage. As he did, the principal and superintendent stepped back, adding to Steven’s confusion. The men actually stepped back out of Steven’s way.
“Everyone just stepped back and they wouldn’t shake my hand,” Steven said. He thought to himself, “Okay, what’s going on?”
A few seconds later, it all started to make sense. He looked across the stage to find his mother walking up the stairs. His mom, Vera Turner, is a Petty Officer 2nd class in the United States Navy. She had been stationed in Guantanamo Bay and hasn’t seen her family in nearly 9 months. As graduation day approached, it wasn’t looking like she was going to make it home for the special occasion.
Steven was shocked along with the rest of the family. Nobody besides the school officials knew what was going to happen. Vera said, “I was bursting, overjoyed with feeling. This is a moment I’d been waiting for. The anticipation of him seeing me was just overwhelming.”
It’s great that Vera was able to make it home for Steven’s graduation. After all, she’s been there with him from kindergarten to senior year. Through the ups and downs. It’s a day that was as special for her as it was for Steven. Thanks for the sacrifices you make for our country Vera! We know it’s not easy to leave your family behind and we appreciate all that you do for us.
