12 Ways To Use A File Cabinet For More Than Just Storing Papers. How Clever!

via The Real Thing with the Coake Family

I have a filing cabinet with many folders inside, but to be honest, there is not much organization in there at all. The drawers are overflowing with papers. I don't even remember why I held onto them. Believe it or not, file organizers can help keep track of more than just important papers that are often forgotten — it can also even serve as great furniture pieces. Here at 12 ways to use file organizer that go farther than files! Did we miss anything? Let us know about the unique uses you have found for them!

1. Organize a messy fridge

My fridge is a jumble of artwork from my sisters, things I need to be reminded of, old schedules, and outdated food coupons. If you have a similar problem to mine, you can use file organizers to straighten out your mess. This example uses three, but you can use however many you need. Give them labels such as "reminders," "recycle," and "coupons." Just remember to use them!

2. Keep your coffee safe

Using a file organizer to arrange your coffee may seem like a silly idea, but to me, it's absolutely genius! You see, I have two cats that seem to believe that anything I put on the counter doesn't belong there. Maybe the organizer would help protect my tea collection from being used as the latest cat toy. It also seems like it would work for your favorite cereals!

3. Never lose a lid

If your kitchen cupboards are anything like mine, your lids are scattered everywhere. The struggle to find the matching container is a daily thing. Attaching a file organizer to the inside of your cupboard would give you a place to store your lids so you always know where they are. Good luck trying to match them with containers, though. Even when they're organized, finding the right one is still a daunting task. This storage solution would also work well with baking sheets and pans.

4. File your food

I would never have thought of this idea. It appears that filing organizers also make for good food storage. Obviously, this storage solution should only be used for non-refrigerated food. This example uses potatoes and onions. Hopefully, you won't cry every time you open your cupboard! I should try this idea for storing my pasta.

5. Store your styling stuff

I have so much stuff on my bathroom counter that it is crazy. I have an electric toothbrush, a straightener, and a curling iron. I am constantly untangling them from each other and worrying about whether they're going to get wet. Putting a file organizer on your counter or in your cupboard would help to keep things dry. Just wrap the cords around your styling items before placing them inside the organizer to avoid tangling them in each other.

6. Keep your clothes to yourself

My childhood was full of arguments with my sister because she used something that was MINE. We always had to have the same thing that was somehow different. This use of a file organizer reminded me of that. Of course, you have a perfectly valid — and more mature — reason as to why you don't want anyone using YOUR washcloth.

7. Keep your favorite makeup on file

I've never really had a lot of makeup myself, so all of my stuff fits inside a tiny black box on my counter. However, if you are one of those people who has a whole collection, a file organizer will be your best friend! All of your beauty supplies can have their space on your bathroom counter so that you're not rummaging through a makeup bag in the morning. Imagine how much time you would save.

8. Never use the wrong sponge

When cleaning day rolls around, I always get nervous that I'll clean something using the wrong sponge. How awful would it be if you accidentally started cleaning your dishes with the sponge meant for your toilet? A file organizer can help you solve that problem. Just remember to label which sponge goes in which spot — especially if you share cleaning responsibilities with someone else!

9. A place to keep your clutches

I have never indulged in the luxury of having more than one purse. I have one that matches pretty much everything and stays close by me at all times. If you are one of those people who has a purse for every occasion, a file organizer could help you make sure the purse that matches your outfit is never too far away. Put it in your closet, or use it as an art display to show off your sense of style!

10. Keep your shoes off the ground

A file organizer is also the perfect solution for your favorite little flats or summer shoes. Nobody likes a messy closet or front hallway. You'll probably save yourself from tripping over your massive collection, too. Thank goodness I don't have to worry about tripping, but a tread mark from my wheelchair tires could certainly ruin a good pair of shoes!

11. A tea time shelf

This is such a cute way to show off your tea collection! This project uses the Knuff file/magazine organizer from IKEA. I just love the shape of it! Of course, if you don't have a tea collection, you can swap it out for whatever you collect. Attach the organizers to your wall from the bottom by drilling some holes and hammering the makeshift shelves into place. You can even paint them to suit your style!

12. A nice shelf or corner table

This next project uses the same organizer on a smaller scale. They put candles and cute home decor on it, but I think it would also be suitable for storing TV remotes and video game controllers. Especially if your TV stand is cluttered, or your TV is mounted to a wall!
