While heading inside a store to get some groceries late at night, a Memphis man encountered a black teen who asked him a question that caught him completely off guard. Stopped in his tracks by what was happening, he saw what was behind him and acted fast. Now, this man will never be the same.

Matt White was at the Kroger store in an upper-class part of this generally poor area at around 9 p.m. at night when 16-year-old Chauncy Jones Black approached him. Before the boy could even get all the words out of his mouth, Matt was struck by the look on his face and his overall demeanor. With his head hanging in shame, it seemed like “he had been turned down 100 times" Matt wrote in a social media post of what happened that night.

Chauncy had taken the bus to the rich people's Krogers; as he referred to it, in hopes of working for food as he had none and only an hour to do it before he had to catch the bus back to his house, where he lived alone with his mother. He asked Matt if he could carry his groceries out to his car for him in exchange for a pack of glazed donuts.

"He looked ashamed, hungry and broken." Matt described. He immediately said that he would get him some donuts, but he wanted to do something else also.

After taking Matt's groceries out to his car, Chauncy told him that he enjoys school, gets straight A's, and is trying to get a job to help his mom pay rent since the two of them have nothing but each other and a bus pass. Matt invited him back in the store and said he wanted him to fill the cart up with all the items he needed, and the teen graciously took him up on the offer.

When they were done shopping, Matt offered to give him a ride instead of having him take the bus home. When Matt pulled up to his house, he couldn't believe what hs saw and he was brought to tears by what he saw - they had nothing.

"I just felt this overwhelming humility for his situation," Matt White said.  "He and his mom had nothing. They didn't even have beds or furniture. They were sleeping on pads made out of sleeping bags, they had two lamps and nothing in their fridge. Nothing. His mother was so sweet but very fragile. I couldn't tell what it was, but she had some sort of physical and/ or mental disability that made her shake and made walking difficult. I thought I was going to cry. As we unpacked the food into their kitchen, you could see the hope coming back into Chauncy's eyes. He knew he wasn't going to be hungry. He looked like a kid again. As I was leaving I gave him a hug and told him how much God loved him and that he was going to grow up to be an incredible man. I'll never forget that hug. It meant more to me than any possession I have. Our God is an awesome God, and we can never be thankful enough for the blessings we have."

After he wrote about his meeting with Chauncy on Facebook he started a GoFundMe page to help him out which has now raised over $340,000 from kind hearted people. After he posted a video of the things Chauncy has missed out on, the internet fell in love with the soft-spoken, good-hearted teen who'd never had a chance.

Matt didn't see skin color on this kid and make any bad assumption about him, he saw a boy struggling more than any kid should, and a desire to earn what he needed. The man acted immediately to help him out because he had the ability to do it and in turn inspired a chain reaction of kindness that led to the teen being able to work and continue to fill his fridge.
