Jovan Virag is a Houston area mother who recently discovered her son’s ‘Jake and the Neverland Pirates’ light up shoes on fire in the back of her car.
The mother posted this picture to Imgur and wrote about how she discovered the burned shoe.
“When we went out to our car this morning, we saw that a fire had happened inside. It pretty much burnt the floor in the back seat and the back of the passenger seat and the back bench seat. We came to the conclusion (along with the fire marshall) that it was my son’s light-up shoes that started the fire. They were completely burnt and charred up with the wires from the lights sticking out. Has anyone else experienced this or heard of this happening?!”
Virag explained to local news station KHOU how they discovered the shoes.
“As soon as we opened up the car door, we could smell the burning plastic.”
“I’m just glad that my son wasn’t wearing them at the time,” said Virag. “I don’t know if he could have told me his foot was hot, and I don’t think he could have taken it off by himself.”
Virag, along with local fire officials, believe that her son, Warren’s light up Jake and the Neverland Pirates light up shoes that were purchased at Payless that could have been the cause of the fire.

To investigate, a reporter with Houston’s KHOU News bought the same pair of shoes at a local Payless and brought them to fire investigator Cam Cope, President of Auto Fire and Safety Consultants.
“Even though it’s a small battery, it still has enough energy to create a fire,” said Cope.
“They’re not high quality,” said Cope. “They’re made in China. In China, the wiring is very, very small. The smaller the wire, the more potential problems you’ll have with wires and fires.”
Cope also says the more the shoe is worn, the greater chance for issues and suggests parents checking the shoes often and never leaving them in a car.
“Sometimes the child may not notice the heat in them,” said Cope. “If you put your fingers in them you can sometimes feel the heat is there. It will heat up for some time before it ignites.”
