He couldn’t dare to see dogs dying on the streets, so he decides to adopt 450 of them

Motivated by a heart of gold, a Serbian man chose not to stand idly by while stray dogs suffered in his hometown. Determined to make a difference, he took it upon himself to establish a shelter and provide refuge for an astounding 450 dogs.
For these homeless dogs, life on the streets meant inevitable suffering, whether it be from starvation, illness, or the clutches of dog catchers. Sasa Pejčić, moved by their plight, felt compelled to take action. Utilizing a few old riding stables he had acquired years ago, Sasa ingeniously repurposed the property, transforming it into a sanctuary where his rescues could roam, rest, and play to their heart's content, free from the hardships they had previously endured.
He took in as many dogs as he could, and he eventually ended up adopting 450 of them!
Of course, caring for and feeding this number of dogs don’t come cheap at all. With a budget of $15 per head a month, Sasa’s shopping bill for his rescues goes up to almost $7,000!
Thankfully, the Harmony Fund – an organization that works to help small animal rescues around the world – supports Sasa’s shelter by paying for the dogs’ food, medical expenses, as well as the compensation for his small staff of helpers.
On their site, the organization has this to say about their mission:
“The Harmony Fund offers a lifeline to so called “underdog” animal rescue squads across the planet. Our partners are the small but incredibly courageous and effective animal rescue teams who operate in parts of the world where funding is very hard to come by.
Our supporters are helping us to dramatically impact the capacity of these rescue teams to touch thousands upon thousands of animals who might otherwise be unreachable.”
Laura Simpson, the founder of the Harmony Fund, told The Dodo:
“Here they are loved and not expected to do anything other than to simply be dogs. Many are adopted out internationally to good homes, and others will spend their remaining days at the sanctuary.”
Without Sasa’s noble initiative and the help of donors, hundreds of dogs would still be out in the streets of Serbia waiting for their demise.
Sasa Pejčić’s compassionate actions have transformed the lives of these dogs who would have otherwise been without shelter, food, and hope. Thanks to his unwavering dedication, these dogs now enjoy a blissful existence akin to a doggie paradise.
