Laura Lee was in utter shock when the lunch she had packed for her 2.5-year-old son was returned by his nursery school because it was “too unhealthy.”
A push to reduce sugars and other elements that can be harmful in excessive amounts in school lunches has emerged in response to concerns about the health of young children. While the intentions come from the right place, this particular school may have taken things a bit too far and Laura isn’t happy about it.
“‘I sent my 2.5 yr old son to school with this and the cookies got sent home because they’re unhealthy,” she wrote on Facebook. “There was 3 MINI cookies.”

Laura’s commentary above is a response to a story by Plymouth Live featuring teachers discussing the most unhealthy lunches they had seen parents pack. Cornwall Live featured that story on Facebook and asked parents to discuss the worst lunches they had seen prepared by a school. That’s when Laura shared her bizarre conflict with her son’s nursery school.
What’s so strange is that this lunch looks more than healthy with a large portion of fresh fruit and veggies along with some lean protein, cheese, and only a few carbs.
Other parents were quick to support Laura. “I work in a nursery and believe me, I have seen some terrible packed lunches in the past!” said one. “This looks perfect to me!”
“Looks like you took time and effort to his lunch ‘fun’ and appealing,” said Susan McGowan. “Absolute rubbish that he wasn’t allowed to get those small cookies. Everything in moderation surely.”
