Incredible man raised his sister since she was 5, helps her battle brain cancer twice
By Mike-Ross

While his mother battled addiction, Anthony was raised by his grandparents. His grandparents shielded him from the darker aspects of his mother’s addiction, which he first witnessed up close when he was only 14 years old. His mother, who was 40 at the time, was using heroin up to ten times a day.
He got a call from his mother revealing she was pregnant just a few months after he learning the dark truth about her addiction. Gianna, his younger sister, was born in August 1999. His mother sobered up and moved down the street with Gianna, allowing him to maintain contact with both of them.
Unfortunately, his mother relapsed, leaving Ant to raise Gianna, who was just 5 years old. He accepted it, and the two siblings formed an incredibly strong bond. Everything was fine until Gianna began to experience health problems. She was diagnosed with brain cancer when she was ten years old.

Gianna was initially terrified, but she rapidly learned to take it day-by-day and be strong. She was given a clear bill of health two years later. For a few years, things were well, albeit the siblings continued to bear the burden of their mother’s tumultuous connection with them, who was in and out of their lives.
One day in 2019, Gianna awoke with no ability to move. Anthony took her to the hospital where she underwent emergency brain surgery. Doctors discovered she had a rare kind of brain cancer and told her she only had nine months to live. She died shortly after her 21st birthday, leaving Anthony with a huge void in his life.
In the video below, Anthony was a featured guest on the show The Doctors where he celebrated his sister’s life and discussed his own struggles with her loss.
“My life has been so different without her in so many ways, from the regular stuff to just being a caretaker, to just … ,” he paused.
“The things I miss the most are the little things at home, her messing with me.”
