Heroic fireman saves baby—17 years later, he reunited with the girl he rescued, what a story!
By Mike-Ross

For the majority of his life, Mike Hughes has been fighting fires. Right now he’s retired, but often finds himself recalling the many people he encountered over countless rescue missions.
Recently, ABC News sat down with Mike to talk about one special mission that happened while he was working as a captain for the Wenatchee, Washington, Fire Department. Mike’s team received a call about a burning family home. More than half the home was ablaze when the firefighters arrived on the scene.
The building was engulfed in flame, but had not yet started to collapse. Mike and his team were on the clock, searching the home room-to-room for signs of life. That’s when Mike found a crib with a small baby curled up inside. Mike grabbed the infant and rushed her outside. He later learned she was only 9-months-old.

Years went by and Mike served on many more missions, but his thoughts often returned to that little infant whose life was almost snuffed out before it had began. He wondered what happened in her life, if she was still safe. Mike often found himself awake in the middle of the night thinking about the life he saved and wondering if she was OK.
In retirement Mike decided to do more than just think. He started to investigate and eventually learned the baby’s name and was able to reach out to her mother.
Watch the video below to find out what happened next when Mike finally reconnects with the girl he saved 17 years ago.
