The reality singing television show The Voice has been entertaining the world since its origin in 2010 as The Voice of Holland. By 2019, The Voice has been adapted in one hundred forty-five different countries or regions, so there’s been plenty of storylines to follow. But no storyline was ever quite so heartwarming than that of Harrison Craig in season two of The Voice Australia.
From the first moment he opened his mouth to sing, everyone could tell he was going to do something special. But it wasn’t until the world heard him speak that they truly started falling in love with his story.
Back in 2013, Harrison Craig was an 18-year-old singer from Melbourne, Australia with a goal of becoming a global recording artist, singing in the opera genre—a blend of pop music, jazz, and opera.
In his first blind audition, Craig wowed the judges with his rendition of “Broken Vow” by the equally amazing Josh Groban. British singer-songwriter Seal was the first of the judges to flip around. He stood for the remainder of Craig’s performance, in awe of his abilities. At the end of the song, he even told Harrison, “Voices like that make me want to coach.
After his performance, however, the judges asked him his name and watched as he struggled to do so. They asked him again, and once more, he couldn’t manage to inflect the “H” sound at the beginning of his first name. Once he finally told them who he was, he also let them know that he’s struggled with a stutter his whole life and that, while his singing voice doesn’t give him trouble, his speech is something else entirely.
In the face of adversity, Craig pursued his goal and watched as the audience and judges of The Voice Australia fell in love with him. He became a fan favorite in no time. After making the finals, Harrison wowed the judges by shining in his rendition of Elvis Presley’s “I Can’t Help Falling in Love with You.”
With the young man’s kind and confident demeanor, audiences everywhere swooned at the young, well-kept man singing with heart and soul, resulting in his finals performance going viral yet again. It’s easy to see his poise and confidence having grown since his first audition, and it’s such a touching transformation to watch considering all that he’s gone through with his own voice.
But his story doesn’t end with this brilliant finals performance! Harrison Craig went on to win season two of The Voice Australia! Upon being awarded this high honor, you can see the entire audience cheering and applauding along with his coach Seal and his little brother in the crowd with tears rolling down his cheeks. What a beautiful and inspiring story and a well-deserved honor for young Harrison Craig.
In his victory speech, Harrison Craig can be seen fighting off tears and his stutter to say, “I’m just thrilled to be a part of this, and I’d like to say thank you to everyone in my family in particular. Mum and Connor, you’ve just been amazing.”
