Fans Say Goodbye To Legendary Hall Of Fame Musician, Dies At 79 After Prosperous Career
‘Rockabilly’ Hall of Famer Billy Adams passed away on Saturday at age 79. His publicist made the sad announcement. No details were released about the cause of death other than to say his life ended at a care facility in Tennessee.
According to Fox News, “Adams died Saturday in Westmoreland, Tennessee. His funeral was held Monday in Spring Hill, Tennessee, said Clif Doyal, Adams' publicist and manager.”
Willie Murray Adams was born in Redbush, Kentucky and in 1940, one of 14 children of a coal mining family. His dad worked at the coal mining facility made famous in Loretta Lynn’s ‘Coal Miner’s Daughter.’
Adams turned to music at an early age instead of following in his father’s footsteps. Legend has it that he constructed his first guitar out of a lard bucket.
Adams was best known for his rockabilly hit, ‘Rock, Pretty Mama,’ which he both wrote and recorded. Other notable songs from the ‘50s include ‘You Heard Me Knocking,’ 'True Love Will Come Your Way,’ and ‘You Gotta Have a Ducktail.’
Later, he turned to the Gospel genre, recording and writing titles such as, ‘I Saw a Man,’ a hit for the Happy Goodman family.
Celebrity Access reports, “During his musical career, Adams is best known as the artist who wrote and recorded the seminal Rockabilly hit, 'Rock, Pretty Mama,' which he released via the independent label Quincy Records in 1957.
"His other hits include 'You Heard Me Knocking' and 'True Love Will Come Your Way,' released on Dot Records, and 'You Gotta Have A Duck Tail,' 'Walking Star,' 'Return of the All American Boy,' 'That’s My Baby,' 'Blue Eyed Ella' and 'The Fun House' for indie label, Nau-Voo Records.”
Adams was married to first wife Freda Louise Riffe from 1961 until her death in 2007. Billy and Freda had three daughters together.
He then wed second wife Sue Justice in 2010. She survives. He is also survived by his daughters, Tina, Janetta, and Kelly.
