If you’re seeking to try a new housecleaning hack, this British mother’s idea may not be your inital first choice. Shortcuts are always great to save a little time, however in this case, it’s best to skip this tip. A mom took her question to Mumsnet, asking about an idea for cleaning the toilet brush. It didn’t go over well.
User meladeso asked: “Would it be absolutely disgusting to put loo brushes in the dishwasher on their own, on hot setting, followed by a hot wash on empty?”
In theory, that sounds like an easy way to clean the item, but in reality, most people found it to be utterly disgusting.
One person answered: ”I’d have to discard the dishwasher afterwards.”
Others wondered why she wouldn’t buy a new toilet brush and she noted that she wasn’t sold on the dishwasher idea, but was trying to be more environmentally conscious. She explained: “I know the thought of it makes me sick too, but I’m sick to death of how easily we just discard plastic.”
She added: “I am NOT buying new ones every six months or whatever. I don’t care how cheap they are. Any alternative suggestions? Did someone say bucket of hot water and bleach?”
Surprisingly, not everyone was cold on the dishwasher idea, as one person answered: “Of course it’s fine! Dishwashers temperature is set to kill all bugs.”
Another person admitted they have used this method: “My dishwasher is eco friendly so uses less water than hand washing. I do my 4 loo brushes, pots they go in, pots they stand on (it’s a whole contraption) every month in the dishwasher. It’s a full load, wouldn’t put anything else in with them.”
Others offered up alternatives, with one person noting: “Putting loo brushes in the dishwasher is gross and not very efficient as you would be using a huge amount of water. Bucket of hot water is a good idea!”
Another user agreed, explaining: “I don’t think I would do that. Just wondering how much all that hot water/electricity/detergent would compare financially and environmentally to getting some cheap new loo brushes?”
Another person gave this simple enough option: “It shouldn’t be necessary. Every morning when I clean the bathroom, I put bleach down the loo and scrub round it, then leave the brush in the loo soaking while I clean the rest of the bathroom. I’m sure the bleach leaves the brush fresh and clean.”
Cleanipedia offers another option for cleaning a toilet brush: fill a bucket with hot water, add bleach, and leave the brush in the bucket for an hour. Rinse the brush with hot water and allow it to dry before returning to the holder.
Among the many comments left on the Daily Mail’s coverage of this cleaning method was one person who noted: “I’ve never had to ‘clean’ a toilet brush in my life. Rinse it off in the toilet (c’mon, just swish it around when the cleanser is still in there) and flush again. And buy a NEW ONE if you think it’s icky.”
