Family Calls Police Due To A Gas Leak. Seconds Later, Mom Spots Cop Lying On The Ground

Valentine’s Day 2019 in South Hill, Virginia was a far cry from what mom thought it was going to be like. Because she started to smell gas, she called 911 and alerted the police to the possibility of a leak. Because this can be exceedingly dangerous, the South Hill Police Department sent one of their best, Corporal C.B. Fleming, to the scene to investigate.
Cpl. Fleming had 15-years of experience with the police department. He’d dealt with all sorts of problems including traffic stops, domestic violence calls, and other very serious criminal activities. He seldom was called in to identify a gas leak, but when he was sent to the scene, he gave it his best effort.
After a thorough investigation, Cpl. Fleming and his team of experts came to the conclusion that the leak was not dangerous. Local residents were safe and sound, but that did not mean that Cpl. Fleming was done with his job. That’s when Cpl. Fleming decided to go above and beyond what he was expected of him, and proved that he is dedicated to serving the community.
Cpl. Fleming dropped to the ground. He splayed out on the concrete with his arms and legs spread. But there was no danger. There was just fun to be had.
While on the ground, Cpl. Fleming started playing with the children in the neighborhood.
Because mom alerted the police to the potential gas leak, she expected them to come, check it out, and leave when they were done. Cpl. Fleming proved to her that he wanted to get to know the kids in the neighborhood and spend some time with the people who live where he works.
Mom Iesha Roper-Boswell recorded the moment which warmed her heart. He opened his heart to the little ones and showed them that police officers are humans just like everyone else. His goal was to show the children that they can feel comfortable and safe within his presence. Children of color do not always feel that way because of discrimination in the country.
“I was telling him that my daughter, my niece, and some of the other children here were afraid of cops,” Iesha told WTVR. “So when he came and played with them, I captured that moment, not because I thought it would go viral, but it was amazing that my niece didn’t break out into tears.”
She added that Virginia kids “need someone who they feel is a superhero.”
South Hill Police Chief Stuart Bowen was very proud of Cpl. Fleming.
“I think he just enjoyed interacting with them because that’s just the kind of person he is,” Chief Bowen said.
And Cpl. Fleming did touch the lives of the community that day. As Iesha said, “It’s just amazing, the bond he has with the children,” the 28-year-old mother told the local station.”
Chief Bowen describes Cpl. Fleming as an “outstanding person” and added: “This isn’t the first time he’s done something like this. (He) saw an opportunity to go out and speak to these kids and show them the positive side of a police officer.”
