5-Year-Old Girl Is In Critical Condition After Parents Didn't Recognize Common Threat In Many American Homes

There’s a common threat in many American homes that too many parents have failed to recognize. One Arkansas family learned the hard way just how devastating one simple oversight can be when their 5-year-old little girl was left in critical condition from a danger lurking in her own home.

Adryanna Nicole, a 5-year-old girl from Marked Tree, Arkansas, was preparing to watch a movie with other children in her home when things took a terrifying turn. One mistake left the youngster fighting for her life, and now, her parents are issuing a warning about the one danger they regretfully overlooked.
After pulling out a dresser drawer, little Adryanna tried to climb onto it in order to reach the DVD player, in hopes of turning it on. But, things certainly wouldn’t go as planned. The girl was left in critical condition after both the dresser and an older model television, which had been sitting on top, toppled over onto her. Immediately, Adryanna was left bleeding excessively and unresponsive, according to WREG.

“She pulled a drawer out and was trying to climb up there and turn on the DVD player, and it just all toppled over,” James Stone, Adryanna’s father, recalled. “Mom ran outside yelling, ‘Please call, someone, call 911. Please, someone, call 911.” Adryanna was rushed to the hospital, but doctors were not optimistic that she would even make it through surgery.
They didn’t know if Adryanna would survive after the girl sustained multiple fractures to her face from the TV landing on her head. A surgeon had to remove part of her skull so her brain had room to swell. She was placed on life support. Eventually, she miraculously started breathing on her own, but she was far from out of the woods as she remained in critical condition.
Adryanna’s family has since said they never imagined an accident like this could happen in their home, but sadly, it occurs more easily than most realize. “Children will [pull out dresser drawers], and then they’ll kind of use them to climb up to the top [towards the TV],” Ron Hazelton, a home safety expert, told Inside Edition. The extra weight of the child can cause the TV and dresser to fall over, he furthered.
This is also more common than one might think. In fact, someone goes to an emergency room across our nation every hour because of accidents like this. According to Safe Kids Worldwide, an organization that seeks to prevent childhood injuries, a child dies every three weeks from a television falling. Because of the prevalence of the problem, the organization has offered tips to protect children from television and furniture tip-overs.
