When 11-year-old Cherish-Rose Lavelle was complaining about being in pain, her mom believed that she was dealing with a bully at school. The girl's personality was different and she was growing in weight. Before she knew it, mom realized that Cherish-Rose had a mass in her stomach. She had no idea what was going on. However doctors discovered exactly what this mass was. They thought that the teen was pregnant and wanted to put her through multiple tests to see if they were correct.
However their assumptions were incorrect. Cherish-Rose was not pregnant, as the doctors predicted. She was suffering from a hug tumor that grown to a massive size. It fooled the doctors into suspecting it was a growing baby.
Cherish-Rose is a student in Queensland, Australia. And when she started to lose weight suddenly, her mother was horrified.
She took Cherish-Rose to the doctor. And the doctor thought the 11-year-old was pregnant. But not long after that misdiagnosis, the 11-year-old was rushed to the Hervey Bay hospital.
Before long, doctors at the hospital learned that Cherish-Rose had a massive tumor that weighed as much as 10-kilograms or 22 pounds! And it was growing on the pre-teen’s ovaries.
Her mother had noticed that Cherish-Rose was behaving differently over the last few months. She used to have a bubbly personality. But two months ago, things suddenly changed.
The tumor proved to be cancerous. This is very rare for a girl Cherish-Rose’s age. And treatment will set her back in her studies. She will not be able to join her classmates as planned.
“This morning she was bright and smiling, but right now she is very down,” her mother told the Daily Mail Australia. “She’s not feeling great.”
Her mother plans to sell her business shop, so she spends time looking after Cherish-Rose in the hospital.
“It’s going to be a long journey,” her mom said.
Cherish-Rose’s mother ran through a lot of scenarios when she noticed the changes in her daughter. She suspects she was suffering from an eating disorder at one point. But then she learned it was the malignant tumor.
“This is something I want parents to be aware of as I thought she was suffering an eating disorder from being bullied for being overweight,” she said. “She suddenly lost 14-15kg, and I started to demand food into her because I was frightened and then when the pain started in her belly and back I was clueless. When I was told she had cancer I couldn’t stop crying, it broke my heart. Now I’ve been told that it is curable I am so relieved. Now my life has changed nothing else matters at all.”
Doctors will first perform chemotherapy to shrink the enormous tumor. When she is ready, Cherish-Rose will undergo surgery to have it removed.
Besides her daughter’s health problem, Cherish-Rose’s mom simultaneously learned that the manager of her shop was committing fraud. She fired her and found herself short-staffed at the same time as this life struggle.
Thousands of people are turning to social media to wish Cherish-Rose well.
