Did you know soap was good for more than just keeping you cleaning and smelling good? I mean, what other uses can we possibly use soap for? Introducing the Irish Spring Soap, which doubles as a garden pest deterrent as well as an garden air-freshener!
There's nothing more disheartening than waking up one morning to find your beautiful garden wiped out overnight by hungry pests. Deer, rabbits and other critters can sometimes treat your garden like it's their own personal vegetarian buffet. All your hard work and money can be obliterated in an instant, leaving you with an ugly, bare yard to grumble over all summer long. The secret to preventing this tragedy might have been in your bathroom this whole time.
Trying to keep nibblers at bay can be an even bigger job than planting and nurturing your garden. None of the usual options are particularly pleasant. Poisons can be potentially harmful to wildlife, pets and, if you grow edible plants, your family. Smelly deterrents are expensive and have to be re-applied frequently. Fences and cages need to be high, go deep into the ground, and still can’t keep out all pests, like insects. They take a lot of work to install as well.
Thankfully, there is a better solution. It's not only effective but cheap and easy. All you need is some Irish Spring soap (original scented) and a few household scrap items, like socks or old hankies. The solution lasts for weeks, so you don't have to keep going out there to re-apply it once you set it up
Best of all, the soap won't hurt the animals, so you don't have to worry that any pets might get too close to the yard. Irish Spring won't hurt your plants, either, so if you're growing edibles you won't have to worry about contaminating your produce with chemicals.
It turns out that Irish Spring has a strong scent that displeases most of the animals that would nibble at your garden plants. Unlike some of the other scents you buy to repel those pests (like coyote urine), you'll actually find the scent quite lovely.
It's pretty easy to set up your soap deterrent. Just cut your soap bars up into large chunks. Put a chunk inside an old sock, stocking or in a piece of cloth, and tack it to a scrap of wood, stick or plant stake. Then put the stakes around the perimeter of the yard, and around any plants that seem particularly attractive to pests.
Alternatively, you could hang the soap chunks on your tomato cages, from trees or on bushes, or simply throw them down around your prized plants. It’s a safe, quick and inexpensive fix to your pest problem—pure genius!
