While Baltimore burned, lawyer Francis Scott Key penned the poem which would go on to become the national anthem of the United States. It was titled “The Star-Spangled Banner.” Key was inspired to write the words as he watched British ships invade Fort McHenry during the Battle of Baltimore in the War of 1812. Key claimed to have kept watch over the large American flag with fifteen stripes and fifteen stars as it flew over the fort despite the bombardment of the Royal Navy, indicating how the United States emerged victorious from the close battle.
When the poem’s words were set to a popular British tune, it became the national anthem of the United States. Now people all across the country learn the words and hear it at public events. But one fan of the Star-Spangled Banner is a lot younger than most.
