A legendary dance routine got a breath of fresh air when a couple took to the dance floor to deliver a flawless rendition. You’ll recognize the tune immediately from the movie Dirty Dancing, called “Hey! Baby,” and dance partners Bianca Locatelli and Nils Andrén, who are swing dancing experts nail it perfectly. They performed the dance at the Rock That Swing Festival 2018 in Munich.
Swing dance has managed to remain timeless, despite other dance crazes fading into the history books. It’s no wonder, given the fun and energetic nature and the ease with which these dancers pull off the moves. It’s beyond mesmerizing and completely unexpected for those who recall this scene from Dirty Dancing playing out much differently.
Bianca and Nils selected quite a departure from the typical swing style music they could have performed to, but it’s clear that their choice works so well. Needless to say, they won the competition.
Bianca started dancing when she was 7 or 8, beginning with ballet. Nils said in a 2017 interview that he had “tried ice hockey, it’s not my thing. I tried soccer, not my thing… I tried a lot of things,” but started dance at about age 9 and won a school competition. The rest, as they say, is history.
In the video, Nils and Bianca start their routine looking coy and cute as the song opens, and then they’re off and dancing. Their fancy footwork and spinning is undeniably amazing, with Nils dropping to his knees swiftly with one move while Bianca sways at one point before they resume their couple’s dance.
Their interpretation of the song reaches new levels of cute when she “walks down the street” and Nils expresses the lyric “that’s the kind of girl I’d like to meet.” They make the entire routine look absolutely effortless, for sure, including those drops down to the floor and then turn back around to an upright position, never missing a beat.
Those who weighed in with comments on the YouTube video were understandably blown away by the performance, with notes such as: “This is the best I ever seen from Nils and Bianca. Absolutely bloody fantastic,” “I love how HAPPY they look dancing! Such infectious smiles! Great dancing,” and “amazing couple.”
Another commenter remarked: “Wonderful!!! Nils, I’m usually watching both dancers. But, I couldn’t take my eyes off of you! I’ve never seen a better dancer and my mother was a dancer!”
One happy fan has shared this couple’s amazing videos with her daughter, writing: “This is the song and dance that brought Bianca and Nils to my attention. Without a doubt, this is my favorite performance from the both of you! Outstanding performance! I have watched this dance so many times. My teenage daughter is now ‘hooked’ on your videos. Just as I do, my daughter loves all the styles of dance from the different eras. I’m now having to go backwards and find all of your past performances throughout the years. Thank you for keeping the love of all styles of dancing alive!”
