Man Responsible For The 9/11 Attacks Has Just Been Allowed To Walk Free From Prison

Mounir el-Motassadeq came into relevance in the public sphere through a particular notoriety. He’s known as one of the people who helped the 9/11 suicide pilots carry out their mission. Prosecutors proved, without a doubt, that el-Motassadeq handled the finances behind the terrorist plot that killed almost 3,000 people. This association went so far that he even signed his name on the last will and testament of Mohamed Atta, the pilot of the airliner that struck the North Tower of the World Trade Center in New York City.
El-Motassadeq is currently one of only two people ever convicted of assisting with the deadly terrorist plot in 2001. He was handed the maximum sentence for being an accessory to mass murder in 2007 and was set to serve 15 years.

The Moroccan criminal is back in the news after having been released from prison earlier than his sentence would indicate. The German system ruled that he had served his due time for his involvement in the crime, and now it’s time for him to be deported back to Morocco.
Once he arrives, he’ll be a free man. But that will not be the end of the possible punishment he’ll face for his crimes. One former strategic analysis from Canada said that he’d be, “very surprised if the US had no interest in him.”
El-Motassadeq’s role in the attack has been up in the air ever since his involvement was revealed back in 2007. He insisted on his day in court that he had no idea what his friends were planning, even after it proved clear that he was privy to information that should have made their plan obvious.
“I swear by God that I did know the attackers were in America. I swear by God that I did not know what they wanted to do,” he shouted at the judge and jury.
The courts were never able to completely prove that he knew, mostly because other Al-Quaeda members refused to correlate his involvement. They were able to prove that he helped them out, but not that he knew the extent of their murderous plans – which led to the accessory to mass murder charge.
They describe his role in the Hamburg cell of Al-Quaeda, which also included Atta and Marwan al-Shehhi and Ziad Jarrah, the other two pilots. This man clearly knew that they planned on doing something with planes in America and actively helped them to conceal their identities. That alone was enough to put him away until now.
The United States and the Moroccan government will certainly be keeping a close eye on his activities from here on out. El-Motassadeq would be well-suited to tread the legal side of the line because otherwise, he’s going to be back in prison before he can do anything about it.
“Why is he being released?” asked one MailOnline commenter. “Why did he not get life imprisonment or death?”
