School Teacher Of 17 Years Gets Fired Because She Gave Kids Zeroes After Not Handing In Their Work
By Dreamer

Teaching is not the easiest profession to work in. The pay is decent for some, but dealing with the administration and problem students makes it all the more difficult to stomach. One teacher in Port St. Lucie, Florida is now unveiling another tough aspect of this underappreciated job – being forced into giving grades that students don’t deserve.
The issue started when students refused to turn in their work at all. Diane Tirado, a middle school teacher, had an issue with this. She gave the student a 0% to send the message that not turning in any work is not okay.

Apparently, that grade went far over the line for both the parents of the child and the school administration. They fired Mrs. Tirado, but refused to cite their policies as a reason for doing so.
The students had 2 weeks to finish the project, an “explorer’s notebook,” that should have been a lot of fun for them. Several of the students didn’t finish their notebook and some didn’t even try. Tirado gave them a big zero for their lack of effort and thought that it would be the end of it.
After 17 years of teaching, it can be assumed that this woman knows how to deal with problem students and those who are underachieving. But a school policy undercut her decision to give them zeros, and now it has cost her the 8th-grade social studies teaching position.
“Bye kids, Mrs. Tirado loves you and wishes you the best in life!” she wrote on the whiteboard on her last day as a teacher at that school. “I have been fired for refusing to give you a 50% for not handing anything in. <3 Mrs. Tirado.”
She grabbed a quick picture of her message and decided to share it online to see what her friends and family thought about the situation. The outpouring of support went far beyond her wildest expectations though!
While her letter of termination doesn’t specify this incident, it can be inferred from the timing that there was a relation. Ms. Tirado was employed as an at-will employee and the school retained the right to fire her for no reason at all. It seems they claimed to do just that, leaving her without any proper reason for being let go.
Tirado refused to back down thanks to all of her public support. She recently went on the offensive and posted a scathing retort to her firing.
“The reason I took on this fight was because it was ridiculous. Teaching should not be this hard,” she wrote on her Facebook page. “Teachers teach content, children do the assignments to the best of their ability, and teachers grade that work based on a grading scale that has been around for a long time.”
She continued to rail against the red tape and rules that every teacher has to deal with every day. There is a lot at stake in the people who are educating our youth, but Tirado thinks that rules like this policy that got her fired are far over the line.
