For Years He Stayed Quiet, But Dennis Quaid Revealed Something We've All Known About

When he was younger, actor Dennis Quaid accompanied his parents at their Baptist church. He was the son of a real estate agent and an electrician. And he had an honest upbringing in his Texas town. But since he entered the Hollywood gamut, he has been forced to face his demons. And that inner struggle has taken our eyes away from the excellent work he had done in his roles. He was talented from the beginning. But his life in the church got him started on sound footing.

“I grew up in a Baptist church, went to Sunday school, and then I got baptized when I was nine and made the decision the same day as my brother. My brother and I, Randy, were both baptized on the same day.”

He went to the University of Houston and began working toward the acting career he always dreamed of having.

Then in 1974, he moved to Los Angeles. Soon enough, he got addicted to cocaine.

“It was very casual at first,” he wrote, according to Hollywood Reporter. “That’s what people were doing when they were at parties. Cocaine was even in the budgets of movies, thinly disguised. It was petty cash, you know? It was supplied, basically, on movie sets because everyone was doing it. People would make deals. Instead of having a cocktail, you’d have a line.”

It took him a long time, but he started to fight the battle against addiction.

“By the time I was doing The Big Easy, in the late 1980s, I was a mess,” he wrote. “I was getting an hour of sleep a night. I had a reputation for being a ‘bad boy,’ which seemed like a good thing, but basically, I just had my head stuck up my a**.”

And when he started winning his battle against his demon of addiction, he began to see more clearly.

“But that time in my life — those years in the ’90s recovering — actually chiseled me into a person,” he wrote. “It gave me the resolve and a resilience to persevere in life. If I hadn’t gone through that period, I don’t know if I’d still be acting. In the end, it taught me humility. I really learned to appreciate what I have in this life.”

He turned to food instead of cocaine, packing on 40 pounds. But one thing he had yet to come to terms with was his relationship with God.

“The question I had as I went around the world was ‘Who is God?’ I became a seeker really. I read the Bible cover to cover. For me, it’s Jesus. It’s the red words of Jesus. How simple it is. There really is redemption, and that was the inspiration,” he explained.

As he was coming to terms with his religion, Dennis Quaid worked on his song “On My Way to Heaven,” which he dedicated to his mother. But it wasn’t until he found Jesus again until he could finish the song.
