Children try have to deal with concerning school, bullies, and learning the lessons they need in life. Childhood is a difficult time of tough lessons and chores and it is a parent’s job to make sure their children learn the things that they need. One of the things that a lot of children deal with are mental disorders that can inhibit their ability to grow and progress is the way that they need to.

There are a growing number of children, between the ages of 3 and 17, that are dealing with these types of disorders and various warning signs that parents need to watch out for so that they can intervene as soon as possible.

Children who become easily aggravated or frustrated with school or peer pressure could be dealing with a mental issue. There are times where bullying can play a part in this, but it needs to be addressed either way. Many times these children will make excuses for why they cannot go to school in order to avoid the issues.

Children should be able to live a worry and carefree life and kids that worry extensively could be battling with undiagnosed issues. They may carry extensive worry about things like catching the bus on time or things that may not happen, but they feel the need to worry about them.

A lot of adolescents have bouts of depression that if not dealt with can lead to bigger, more significant issues. They can exhibit depressive or withdrawn behavior on a regular basis that can turn to habits that make the issues worse.

A child’s performance in school can be a warning signal that parents need to be vigilant of. Kids with these type of disorders have issues with concentration and have behavioral issues within the classroom and with other students. They also have habitual issues with reading, math, and science due to issues with focus and concentration.

Long-term drug or alcohol abuse by a teen could be a sign of self-medication. They may be turning to these substances, just like adults do, to deal with the feelings and thoughts that they don’t want to deal with.

The World Health Organization has reported that 10-20% of children and adolescents deal with a mental disorder. The 5 most popular diagnosis for children between the ages of 3 and 17 are Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, anxiety, depression, and Autism spectrum disorders. It does need to be kept in mind that some of these numbers are due to over-diagnosis, which is a problem in it of itself.

One of the worst things about these disorders are the outlying conditions and situations that they can lead to. Suicide is the second leading cause of death in teenagers and many times this is a result of a mental disorder that has not been diagnosed or even noticed. Many times, a lack of self-esteem is another big issue that revolves around these disorders as well because children are not given the proper tools to handle and cope with the situation they are in.
